TORRANCE, Calif. ? Toyota introduced today the all-new, seventh-generation Camry, America's best-selling car for nine years running and 13 of the past 14 years. The 2012 Camry debuts a bold, sophisticated new design with a more spacious interior, improved driving dynamics and an even quieter ride than before. With class leading safety, fuel economy and multi-media technology added in, the end result is the best Camry ever made. Introduced in 1983, the Toyota Camry would later establish the template for the modern midsize sedan, setting benchmarks for Quality, Dependability and Reliability, along with a comfortable, quiet ride. Since that time, Toyota has sold more than 15 million Camry models worldwide.
"The all-new 2012 Camry blends an evolution of the car's values ? such as comfort, efficiency, reliability and safety ? with a more appealing design and engaging driving experience," said Bob Carter, Toyota Division group vice president and general manager. The Toyota Camry again offers three powertrain choices, all of which have been enhanced for 2012 to provide better fuel economy and more responsive performance. All Camry models with the revised 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine now offer 178 horsepower, an increase of nine hp, and 170 lb.-ft. of peak torque. EPA-estimated fuel economy figures are 25 mpg city/35 highway, and the 28 mpg combined is two more than the previous generation Camry. The 2.5-liter engine employs Dual VVT-i (Dual Variable Valve Timing-intelligent), which controls valve timing on both the intake and exhaust camshafts for optimal performance and efficiency at all engine speeds. The Acoustic Control Induction System (ACIS) helps optimize torque over a broad engine speed range.

Performance and Efficiency
The DOHC 3.5-liter V6, available in the SE and XLE grades, delivers 268 horsepower at 6,200 rpm and 248 lb.-ft. of peak torque at 4,700 rpm. Enhancements to this engine boost its fuel economy to projected EPA-estimated ratings of 21 mpg city/30 mpg highway, the best for any current V6 midsize sedan.
The V6 uses chain-driven camshafts and Dual Variable Valve Timing with intelligence (Dual VVT-i). To improve efficiency, the V6 features a new, lower oil viscosity and an automatic transmission fluid warmer that brings the transmission to operating temperature more quickly in cold weather. Higher final drive-gear ratios also contribute to better fuel economy in the new Camry models.
The gas-engine LE, XLE and SE models come equipped exclusively with a six-speed automatic transmission that offers a sequential manual shift mode using the console shifter. Intelligent control adapts shifting strategy in response to driver input, with fast kick-down. In addition, the Camry SE exclusively offers a "D range" sequential shifting, which allows manual shifting with the new steering wheel paddle shifters even when the console shifter is in the "D" mode. Also exclusive to the Camry SE, the automatic transmission features faster shift times when in "S" mode and downshift blipping control emphasizes a sense of sportiness.
All-New Camry Hybrid Sets New Standard for Mid-size Hybrid Sedans
The all-new Camry Hybrid debuts a highly revised version of the brand's Hybrid Synergy Drive powertrain, including a new 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine. The 2012 Camry Hybrid LE, with EPA-estimated 43 mpg city/39 mpg highway/41 mpg combined, yields a more-than-30 percent boost in fuel economy in the EPA city and combined driving cycles, compared to the previous generation, thanks largely to the new hybrid powertrain, but also due to lighter vehicle weight and optimized aerodynamics.
Through its unique transaxle, the Hybrid Synergy Drive system combines output from the four-cylinder engine with a small high-torque electric motor. The system produces a combined 200 horsepower and varies power between the gas engine and electric motor, or combines both, as needed.

achieve maximum efficiency. The Variable Valve Timing with intelligence (VVT-i) system on the intake camshaft enhances torque, which is greater than with the previous engine. An electric water pump, a roller-rocker type valvetrain and a variable-output oil pump help to reduce internal friction, boosting economy.
A new water-cooled exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system helps to ensure the lowest possible emissions at all vehicle speeds and helps increase fuel efficiency. By cooling and controlling exhaust gas injected into each cylinder, the system eliminates the need to richen the air-fuel mixture to control cylinder temperatures.
The 2012 Camry Hybrid meets AT-PZEV (Advanced Technology Partial-credit Zero Emissions Vehicle) standards. New sound absorbing materials in the engine compartment, along with more linear control over engine speed, give the 2012 Camry Hybrid a more pleasing sound under acceleration.
Because there are situations in which the gas engine in the Camry Hybrid shuts off, air conditioning and power steering systems are driven electrically. New efficiency measures in the Hybrid Synergy Drive system include reducing internal losses in the transaxle, improving motor-voltage control, and optimizing the regenerative braking. The
proven nickel-metal-hydride battery, located in the luggage compartment behind the rear seats, now features enhanced air-cooling. Its more compact size, along with moving the DC/DC converter to the engine compartment, results in a trunk that is 2.1-cubic feet larger than in the previous-generation Camry Hybrid.
Lighter overall vehicle weight also contributes to better performance and fuel economy. Its 7.6-second zero-to-60 acceleration time places the Camry Hybrid between the four-cylinder and V6 models. Lower rolling resistance tires, available for the first time in 17-inch size, also help boost fuel economy.
New for the 2012 Camry Hybrid, an EV Drive mode allows the driver to operate the car on the electric motor alone for up to 1.6 miles at lower speeds (below approximately 25 mph). The EV indicator illuminates when the vehicle is being propelled solely by the electric motor.
As on the previous Camry Hybrid, ECO mode optimizes throttle response and air conditioning output to prioritize maximum fuel economy. A Hybrid-exclusive instrument cluster with Hybrid System Indicator and fuel consumption indicator helps the driver to operate the car as economically as possible. car's Multi-Information display graphically shows fuel economy in real time and can also show energy flow, and cruising range information.
As before, applying the brake converts the motor to a generator that captures the kinetic energy from the still-spinning vehicle wheels, storing it in the hybrid battery pack. Putting the shifter into "B" uses regenerative braking as a form of engine braking for
enhanced control on steep descents. New hill-start assist control helps prevent the vehicle from rolling backward when starting off on an incline when the brake pedal is released.
Exclusive exterior and interior design touches and badging differentiate the 2012 Camry Hybrid from other Camry models. Inside, Hybrid-exclusive trim is found on the instrument panel and door switch bases, upper console panels and shift knob. The
Camry Hybrid also features its own exclusive seat fabric in ivory or light gray. An exclusive leather and Ultrasuede is also available. A three-dial Optitron gauge panel with chrome-accented outer rings provides a luxurious appearance.
Grade Strategy
The all-new Camry and Camry Hybrid will offer six different model grades to choose from. Camry will be available in the entry-level L, value-driven LE, premium XLE and sporty SE grades. The XLE and SE are available with four-cylinder or V6 engines. The Camry Hybrid is offered in LE and XLE grades.
Exterior Design
The 2012 Camry employs an elegantly simple but modern form, emphasizing a wider, lower stance than previous models. The design conveys an "architectural statement" through crisp, precise character lines, while a more strongly curved door cross-section and more defined rocker panel molding (chrome accented on LE and XLE) give the Camry a more expressive appearance.
Headlights show a more dynamic shape, with a pronounced curvature of the main-beam unit merging into the bumper cover. Fog lights are standard on the XLE and SE grades. The rear lamp clusters wrap tightly into the body sides, with their top sections extending into the trunk panel.
The Camry LE and XLE feature additional exterior chrome trim, and the SE grade debuts its own lower-body design and exclusive fine-mesh upper grille section. The SE also features three-part lower grille section housing fog lamps, along with black sport trim headlamp

bezels. The more prominent rocker panel moldings on the SE cleanly link to integrated front and rear underbody spoilers, emphasizing width, and the trunk lid carries an integrated spoiler.
Accentuating the new body design are four new colors. Two of the colors (Attitude Black Metallic and Clearwater Blue) are all-new to Toyota in the U.S. Attitude Black Metallic blends in a bright blue pigment for an intriguing take on traditional jet black; Clearwater Blue incorporates a silver metallic pigment to lend this hue a glassy, water-like finish.
Interior Design
While featuring nearly the same external dimensions as the previous generation, the 2012 Camry offers a more inviting and spacious interior. A new dashboard design, modified seat locations, redesigned seats and "lean" door, pillar and headliner trim all combine to add both real space and greater perceptual spaciousness while also enhancing outward visibility. Repositioning the driver's seat and the standard tilt/telescoping steering wheel (tilt has increased 33 percent for greater driver comfort) also aid forward visibility and enhance the driver's positioning.
The accelerator pedal and front seats were moved forward, and the rear-seat hip point was positioned rearward, increasing the couple distance by 0.6-inch; together with reshaped front seatbacks help increase rear-knee room by 1.8-inch. The redesigned center console and front edge of the rear-seat cushion increase rear middle seat legroom by two inches.
Not as obvious are the many areas where Camry designers reshaped interior trim to increase the feeling of spaciousness, including the A- and B-pillars, headliner
over the rear seat and door trim. In most vehicles, space is left between the structure and the trim to yield a "clean" surface. Using a lean-car design approach, the trim more closely follows the structure beneath it. The result is added space that contributes much more to a feeling of comfort than the gains in mere millimeters might suggest.
Three-dimensional construction and contrasting-material textures give the new instrument panel a feeling of depth, while the shapes themselves contribute to a more spacious cabin and improved forward sightlines. The prominently curved center cluster appears to float over the instrument panel, reducing its visual mass. Soft textures used on the upper instrument panel, upper door trim, door armrests and center console armrest contribute to greater comfort in the Camry. Stitching on the instrument panel soft padding and matching stitching-look trim elsewhere helps to create a sense of luxury. Aluminum-color and chrome trim are used judiciously.

The Camry LE and XLE grades feature either ivory or gray seating color; the Camry SE features unique upholstery in black-on-black or black-on-gray. Newly designed front-seat frames, higher seatbacks and longer seat cushions enhance comfort. The height adjustment on the driver's seat offers nearly a half inch greater range than before (total travel is 2.4 inches). The SE's sporty front seats provide thicker side bolsters, and the exclusive three-spoke leather-wrapped steering wheel offers paddle-shift control for the six-speed automatic transmission.
For 2012, the Camry offers four seat-covering materials: fabric in the LE and XLE; fabric with SofTex in the SE, standard leather trim on the XLE V6 (optional in the XLE four-cylinder), and Ultrasuede® with leather available for the SE and XLE Hybrid. Heated seats are standard on the XLE V6 and are available for SE, XLE four-cylinder and Hybrid with variable temperature control.
The new Camry provides the added functionality demanded by consumers today, yet keeps its controls straightforward and intuitive to use. Control knobs impart a high-precision feel when used. Special attention was paid to function and comfort with the center console design. Soft kneepads on both sides add comfort for the driver and passenger; the front section offers a 12V accessory connector and an easy-to-access USB/input jack port for connecting iPods and other media devices. A sliding rear console door ? rather than the more traditional flip-up design ? enables easier access from either front seat. Two steering wheel designs, with integrated audio and Bluetooth® controls, are featured: a four-spoke for LE; a leather-wrapped four-spoke for XLE; and a sporty three-spoke, leather-wrapped wheel for the SE.
All grades now feature a standard 60/40 split folding rear seatback to expand cargo capacity. The seats can be lowered by a remote release from the trunk area. Rear-seat side airbags are standard across the line, and an armrest with cup holders adds comfort and convenience.
Advanced Connectivity
Seamlessly integrated into the Camry are state-of-the-art electronics and enhanced connectivity features. A Bluetooth wireless connection for compatible hands-free phone calls is standard, now improved by an available automatic phone book transfer function. Also standard is a USB port that allows playing of music and video from portable audio devices, using the vehicle sound system and available in-dash display screen, including full iPod integration.

The standard audio system on LE, XLE and SE has a 6.1-inch screen and six speakers. The screen also displays the energy monitor and fuel consumption data, and functions as the monitor for the available integrated back-up camera (SE and XLE only) and the Display Audio System. The screen also offers a new value-driven navigation system and serves as a portal for Entune, Toyota's innovative new multimedia system. An available HD Radio system enables CD sound quality from digital FM broadcasts, and has features that maximize analog and AM broadcast sound quality. The system will include HD Radio with iTunes tagging for future purchase and SiriusXM Satellite Radio™.
The top-of-the-line audio is equipped with a new seven-inch Premium HDD Navigation system with Entune™ and JBL. This system offers a new split-screen feature that allows for simultaneously displaying navigation and audio information.
Camry also offers the new JBL GreenEdge™ audio system that combines an eight-channel amplifier and door-mounted "acoustic lens" speakers, to provide a high-quality sound. The GreenEdge amplifier achieves a 66-percent reduction in overall mass and a 50-percent enhancement in sound efficiency. The GreenEdge speakers produce a higher output of sound with the same power or less consumption of conventional models.
Entune Multimedia System
Camry will be one of the first Toyotas to offer the Entune multimedia system. For the first time ever in a Toyota automobile, this new system leverages the
mobile smartphone to provide a richer in-vehicle experience with fully integrated access to navigation, entertainment and information services.
Toyota Entune debuts the first-ever support for engaging mobile apps, such as Bing, OpenTable, and movietickets.com, along with accessing useful travel-related services, such as live weather, traffic, fuel information (location and price), stocks, and sports. Toyota Entune brings the largest selection of music options available to a vehicle, including iHeartRadio's 750+ stations, and Pandora's personalized music service.
The audio systems combined with Entune feature a best-in-class, advanced conversational voice recognition system that helps the driver to stay focused on the road by eliminating the need to memorize thousands of voice commands. The system will also allow for audio read-back and replay capabilities for text messages, with the ability to respond by pre-set "Quick Reply Messages" such as: "I'm driving and will reply later."

A New Benchmark for Midsize Sedan Quietness
Long lauded as a benchmark for ride smoothness and quietness in the midsize segment, the all-new Camry resets the standard by taking both attributes to an even
higher level of refinement. To reduce noise throughout the entire cabin, focus was placed on suppressing noises that stand out. As powertrains have become more refined and quieter, wind noise and road noise have tended to become more noticeable to drivers and passengers. A low noise reading (in decibels) does not always equate to a subjectively quiet interior. Vehicle occupants' perception of quietness also depends on the type and frequency of the sound.
It was determined where such noticeable sounds enter the cabin, and additional insulation was placed in those areas. New sound absorbing materials silence any noise that manages to penetrate the interior. In particular, engineers focused on suppressing noises that are near the frequencies of human speech to provide an environment that is more comfortable for conversation.
Measures that focus on reducing wind noise include stronger door and rocker area seals; optimized placement of sound insulating materials; foam applied in the roof, pillars and door openings; acoustic glass used for the V6 and Hybrid model's windshield; and special bracing of cowl intake louvers.
The dashboard structure and assembly, one of the most complex areas in modern cars, was thoroughly optimized to prevent noise intrusion. It can also be a source of noise intrusion. The structure employs a new cross member and center brace, along with sandwiched sheet steel to suppress resonance and reduce vibration. With the sandwiched steel, asphalt foam is used to absorb vibration energy while increasing sound blocking effectiveness.
A dash outer silencer uses an air layer between the dash panel and sound absorbing felt. An inner silencing layer uses soft and hard felts to block a wide range of low-to-high frequencies. Damping-coating thickness and application areas have been optimized for reduced floor-panel vibration and noise penetration through the floor, and a new type of carpet helps eliminates noise. Silencer panels installed in the rear-wheel housings, and new sound-absorbing materials added to the trunk's interior side trim further reduce road noise from the tires and wheel housings.

Exceptional Handling and Ride
A more rigid body structure, revised front suspension, redesigned rear
suspension and aerodynamics all help to imbue the new Camry with greater straight-line stability and crisper steering response, while also enhancing overall ride comfort. Handling stability, more than just conveying a sense of driving enjoyment, also greatly influences the driver's feeling of security.
The 2012 Camry body structure uses a greater amount of high tensile steel (440 Mpa or higher) than before and even stronger high tensile strength sheet steel (590 Mpa or higher), resulting in a stronger but lighter body than the previous model. A flared design on the doors and fenders enables use of slimmer but stronger construction. High tensile aluminum bumper supports are lighter yet stronger than before. Newly developed plastic for the bumper covers and cowl louvers reduces weight as well.
The stiffened cowl section increases suspension-area rigidity, suppressing twist. The front-suspension towers are directly connected through the cowl to increase rigidity, and the attachment method and reinforcement braces have been strengthened. The all-new rear underbody and rear subframe increase lateral force control and torsional rigidity.
The McPherson-strut front suspension now uses inversely wound coil springs that enhance straight-line stability. Shock-absorber damping and stabilizer-bar thickness have been optimized as well. The rear suspension retains the proven dual-link strut configuration of the previous model but has been redesigned with new geometry (increased toe-in during cornering and braking) and retuned components to enhance cornering stability. Coil springs, bushings, stabilizer-bar and shock-absorber damping have all been revised.
Rear-combination lamps and side-view mirrors on the 2012 Camry incorporate aero stabilizing fins, inspired by Formula One racing technology, that create air vortexes on the body sides to stabilize the body and contribute to handling stability. Underbody aerodynamic elements regulate airflow under the vehicle, also contributing to ride smoothness.
The Camry SE model features specific suspension components and tuning, including exclusive steering knuckles and lighter, stiffer lower front control arms. The front and rear springs are exclusive to this model, and the shock absorbers feature internal rebound springs for greater cornering roll resistance. The rear suspension No. 1 control arm uses a pillow-ball bushing to further enhance handling agility.

2012 Toyota Camry-Camry Hybrid/10-10-10-10
All new Camry models will be the first to feature Toyota's latest electric power steering (EPS) control system, which will offer more flexibility to steering-feel tuning. The system regulates power-assist response based on vehicle speed, and for the first time steering-input rate. The vehicle-speed sensing feature will provide light effort during low speeds, changing to moderate effort during higher speeds. The SE grade will feature a power-assist ratio that provides a more sporty feeling than the LE and XLE.
Also, electricity is only consumed when assist power is necessary, helping to improve fuel economy. Electric power steering is also more environment-friendly, as it does not require hydraulic fluid.
All Camry grades feature newly developed all-season tires designed for an optimal balance of fuel economy, handling, quietness, ride comfort and braking performance. The LE grade features standard 16-inch wheels; the SE comes standard with five-spoke 17-inch alloy wheels and the V6 SE offers the first 18-inch alloy wheels on a Camry. The latter feature is a unique twist-spoke design with 225/45R18 all-season tires. Camry SE models will also include tires that have more grip. The Camry XLE comes standard with 17-inch alloy wheels featuring an elegant 10-spoke design.
Safety and Security
All 2012 Camry models are equipped with 10 standard airbags: dual-stage advanced SRS front airbags, front and rear seat-mounted side airbags, side curtain airbags and a driver's and front passenger's knee airbag. The front-passenger's knee airbag and rear-seat side airbags are new to Camry.
The Camry's body structure is designed to help absorb collision-impact forces and help minimize impact deformation to the passenger cabin. High-strength steel is used for B-pillar and rocker-panel reinforcements to help manage overall body deformation in the event of certain side collisions. The seat frames also are designed to help absorb side collision loads. The inner-hood structure and front-edge construction are designed to help reduce pedestrian injuries in a collision.
Like all Toyota models, the Camry will feature Toyota's Star Safety System™ standard, which includes Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), Traction Control (TRAC), Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist. It also features the standard Smart Stop Technology brake-override system. An electronic tire pressure monitoring system is standard equipment.

Another available safety system, Safety Connect, can access a call center with a live operator who can dispatch police and emergency vehicles. The system combines automatic collision notification and a stolen vehicle locator feature, which can track the location of the stolen vehicle via GPS and help guide police to recover it.
The new available Blind Spot Monitor uses sub-millimeter wave radar to detect vehicles in the driver's blind spots. When the system detects a vehicle in the adjacent lane, it alerts the driver using indicators on the side mirrors. If the turn signal is on when the there is a vehicle in the blind spot of the driver's intended lane, the indicator on the corresponding mirror will flash. The driver can switch off the system, if desired.
In vehicles equipped with one of the display audio systems and backup camera, when the vehicle is shifted into Reverse, the audio display will show the image of what the camera captures, along with an overlay of positioning lines representing the parking space and distance to obstacles.
Peace of Mind Warranty Protection
Toyota's 36-month/36,000 mile basic new-vehicle warranty applies to all components other than normal wear and maintenance items. Additional 60-month warranties cover the powertrain for 60,000 miles and against corrosion with no mileage limitation. The hybrid-related components, including the HV battery, battery control module, hybrid control module and inverter with converter, are covered for eight years/100,000 miles.
The Camry will also come standard with Toyota Care, a complimentary plan covering normal factory-scheduled maintenance and 24-hour roadside assistance for two years or 25,000 miles, whichever comes first.

Toyota and Lexus Say 'Welcome Home' to Troops with Special Financing and Military Rebate Program for All New Toyota and Lexus Vehicles Rebates and Low APRs Offered to Qualified Active Military Personnel and Inactive Reserves

January 9, 2012 - Torrance, Calif. ? As tens of thousands of troops return from overseas deployments, Toyota and Toyota Financial Services (TFS), and Lexus and Lexus Financial Services (LFS) are offering special APRs and rebates to qualified military personnel and inactive reserves through participating dealers.

In recognition of their service, qualified Toyota buyers under the Welcome Home Special APR Program can receive a 1.9% APR for up to 60 months when financing any new 2011 or 2012 Toyota vehicle through a participating Toyota dealer and TFS. In addition, a $500 Military Rebate may be used in conjunction with the special APR.

"In appreciation for all that they have done, and continue to do, we hope these rebates and special APRs make it a bit easier for our men and women in uniform who are in the market for a new vehicle," said Mike Groff, TFS/LFS Group Vice President of Sales, Marketing & Product Development. "We understand that it's certainly a tough economic time right now for many military families, so it's our hope that these special APRs and rebates, which can be coupled with other incentives, will help our troops save some much-needed and hard-earned money."

Tucson, AZ ? October 17, 2011 ? Precision Toyota will present a new 2011 Prius to Vets4Vets as part of the Toyota "100 Cars for Good" program on October 26th at 1pm at the dealership. 

 

The Toyota "100 Cars for Good" program is awarding 100 vehicles over the course of 100 days to 100 deserving nonprofit organizations based on votes from the public. 100 Cars for Good engages the public to help determine how corporate philanthropic donations will be awarded.

 

Vets4Vets (www.vets4vets.us) is a Tucson-based nonprofit 501C3 organization established in 2005. Vets4Vets enables veterans to interact with one another and provides an atmosphere for healing, camaraderie, and fulfilling actions to be taken.  This positive environment promotes recovery through the interactions between fellow veterans who have served. 

 

According to Abel Moreno, Executive Director of Vets4Vets, and the Tucson 2011 40 under 40 Man of the Year, "This vehicle will be used to help assist veterans nationally by being able to drive to workshop venues.  Vets4Vets hold national workshops and this fuel efficient Prius will make the events easier to get to.  We will be able to cut travel cost to provide more peer-support workshops through out United States because of Toyota.  This car will allow us to pick?up our volunteers in the various locations around the country.  It is a privilege and an honor to accept this vehicle on behalf of the staff and the nationwide veterans we serve."

DETROIT - Quality should be Job 1 at Ford again.

The brand's ranking fell 10 spots in Consumer Reports' annual auto reliability survey, hurt by glitchy touch screens and transmissions. It now ranks 20th out of 28 major brands, based on a survey of the magazine's subscribers.

The Dearborn, Mich., automaker had been closing the quality gap with Japanese brands in recent years, but it may need to take its own advice from a 1980s ad campaign, in which it told viewers that "Quality is Job 1."

Japanese automakers continued to dominate the survey's top rankings. Brands from Toyota, Honda and Mazda held the top nine spots in the 2011 study, while Chrysler's Jeep was the top brand from a U.S. automaker. The Chrysler brand showed the most improvement over last year.

The findings are based on surveys taken this spring of subscribers who own or lease 1.3 million vehicles of model years from 2002 to 2011. The magazine uses the findings to predict reliability of 2012 models.

Consumer Reports ranks No. 3 on the list of information sources Americans use in choosing vehicles to buy, topped only by brand loyalty and recommendations from friends and family. The magazine released its annual survey results Tuesday in Detroit.

At Ford, magazine subscribers found problems with the MyFordTouch and MyLincolnTouch dashboard control screens, saying they froze or were difficult to use, said David Champion, senior director of auto testing for Consumer Reports. The screens control cabin temperature, the radio and other functions. Also, the company's new small cars, the Focus compact and Fiesta subcompact, have new automatic transmissions that shift often and awkwardly, Champion said.

Bennie Fowler, Ford's group vice president for quality, said the company is taking the customer feedback seriously and is working to continuously improve vehicles.

For the fourth year in a row, Toyota's Scion, a brand geared toward young people, had the fewest problems, followed by Toyota's Lexus brand, Honda's Acura, Mazda, and the Honda brand overall. Lexus, a perennial top finisher, recovered from a fall last year, rising seven spots on the list.

At Chrysler, however, new or significantly revamped models led its resurgence. Champion said the Chrysler 200 midsize sedan, and the new Jeep Grand Cherokee and Dodge Durango SUVs helped the company improve its ranking.

Toyota builds giant human out of 18 smaller humans to say there's a Prius for everyone

Toyota and Saatchi & Saatchi have been feeling the heat lately for being a bit creepy. Now, here's another mildly unsettling campaign from the agency and automaker?though at least this one shouldn't bring any lawsuits.

To illustrate that the Toyota Prius has expanded its line to four vehicles, and now has something for everyone, Saatchi & Saatchi L.A. came up with a peculiarly grand idea?having 18 people link together, Pilobolus-like, to create an enormous person going about his morning routine in the suburbs. The giant wakes up, draws the curtains, stretches, brushes his teeth and gets dressed for work. After a spot of breakfast and a glance at the morning paper, he steps outside?where we see four Prius cars parked in the driveway. At this point, the huge person begins to dismantle, as the 18 people peel off and walk to their respective cars. "Toyota presents the Prius family," says the voiceover. "There's the original one, the bigger one, the smaller one, and the one that plugs in. They're all a little different. Just like us." The camera sweeps to the sky to show a multicolored graphical representation of the four cars, along with the line, "Prius goes plural."

The outlandish fairy-tale conceit, while odd, is certainly eye-catching and very different for the category, even if the internal logic of the make-believe world feels a little fuzzy. "From one person to many, from one Prius to many," is how Saatchi executive creative director Margaret Keene explains the metaphor. (Perhaps it would help if the latter process were visualized, too.) But quibbles aside, the spot is undeniably memorable, and it's likely to inspire mentions all over Twitter after each national airing?much like the Honda Civic's furry monster, itself a figure that instilled a certain amount of dread, did a few months ago.

One last note: It appears that "Prii" won the James Lipton-led contest for how one actually should pluralize the word Prius. But Toyota isn't using Prii much in the new marketing materials, preferring instead to go with the warmer and cuddlier "Prius Family."

How it works:
A teaser promotion kicked off December 1s.  We will have digital ad banners on auto endemic websites where in-market shoppers are doing their research.  We will also have mentions on auto blogs to start to spread the news of the $500 offer.  All banners will link to the butatoyota.com home page.  There, people can research current offers, and find out more about the Shareathon program.  

Then, on December 8, the program goes live.  ToyotathonShareathon.com will generate 500 unique, coded certificates per day for four days.  A total of 2,000 unique certificates will be issued.  No additional certificates will be available, nor are they transferable.

Customers will qualify for the $500 if they do all three of the following:

TMC announced early today that it will resume Japan production Monday of Prius along with the Lexus CT 250h and HS 250h at its Tsutsumi and Toyota Motor Kyushu plants.  


The vehicle assembly announcement comes one week after Toyota restarted production of replacement parts and three days after reopening plants to produce parts for overseas plants in the aftermath of a massive earthquake/tsunami that struck the country on March 11.

Complimentary maintenance has proven to be a big hit with customers since it was first offered to Toyota owners (beginning March 2010) and Scion owners (beginning June 2010). Since then, it?s expanded to all eligible retail customers who purchase a new Toyota or Scion vehicle. Toyota?s Perceived Quality Score in ALG?s Fall 2010 study climbed 5% in the last six months, driving the automaker up from 6th to 2nd place among mainstream brands, ALG announced today.  ALG, a subsidiary of DealerTrack Holdings Inc., is the industry benchmark provider of residual values and depreciation data.  Honda ranked first among mainstream brands and Mercedes Benz led luxury brands, with Lexus a close second.

Toyota Dominates Consumer Reports Reliability Survey and Recommendations



Toyota dominated the highly respected Consumer Reports Annual Car Reliability Survey with 17 Toyota, Scion and Lexus vehicles being ranked as ?most reliable? and 12 making the ?recommended? list, more in both categories than any other automaker. Overall, Scion ranked No. 1 in the survey, with the Toyota and Lexus nameplates ranking in the top 9.

The reliability findings are based on responses to a survey this spring of 1.3 million vehicles owned or leased by Consumer Reports magazine or web site subscribers. Its recommendations are based on the reliability survey rankings and vehicle tests conducted by the magazine. Consumer Reports said safety was a main focus of the vehicle tests this year.  


The report is one of the most highly anticipated by consumers and is the third most influential factor in choosing a new vehicle after ?brand loyalty? and ?family/friends,? according to a recent survey.

Five TMS vehicles were ranked most reliable and scored the highest in their category:  Yaris, FJ Cruiser, Lexus LX, Sienna (V6 FWD) and the Tundra V6.

Why thieves love the '91 Toyota Camry...

 
The popular '91 Toyota Camry tops the list of the most frequently stolen cars in the nation last year.

The ranking of the most popular targets of car thieves was compiled by the National Insurance Crime Bureau, a nonprofit organization dedicated to preventing insurance fraud and vehicle theft. 

"It's a good car," he said. "They sold a lot of them and they stay on the road for a long time. The people who own them tend to take care of them, so that creates a demand for parts. That's why the thieves like them so much -- it's easy to sell their parts."

The average age of vehicles on the top-10 list is 12 years, with the '91 Camry being the oldest. The newest car to make the list is the  2009 Toyota Corolla.

Scafidi said he isn't surprised that older cars tend to be popular targets. In addition to supplying in-demand parts, these older cars are:

  • Easier to steal. Car manufacturers in recent years have added many theft deterrents that older models don't have.
  • Not as likely to have after-market security devices, such as warning, tracking and disabling devices.

Scafidi notes that his group's study analyzes all stolen cars, not just those that are insured against theft.

 He said many drivers drop comprehensive auto insurance when their vehicles get older, but he's not sure dropping that coverage is such a good idea. Comprehensive insurance pays you the value of your car if it's stolen; if you don't have comprehensive coverage, you won't be reimbursed for your stolen vehicle.

The NICB report also found that car theft in 2009 was down from 2008, and that 2009 was the sixth consecutive year that vehicle thefts in the U.S. have declined. Scafidi credits "a convergence" of factors -- better enforcement and prosecution, better tracking services for cars, and many standard and after-market devices that "make that vehicle less attractive to the opportunistic thief."

 "Most thieves are just people who want to get from one side of town to the other and can't figure out the bus schedule," he says. "They're looking for cars that have the keys left in them, are parked in a dark place or have been left running while the owner ran inside to get a cup of coffee."

 NICB also released a list of the metropolitan areas with the highest vehicle theft rates in the country. On that list, Laredo, Texas, was No. 1, followed by Modesto and Bakersfield, Calif. California cities took six of the top 10 spots.

Toyota Motor Sales U.S.A. Inc. unveils the demonstration version of the RAV4 electric vehicle at the 2010 Los Angeles auto show today.

The model, based on the auto maker?s second-generation, gasoline-powered RAV4 cross/utility vehicle, is a co-development of Tesla Motors Inc., which is supplying the battery. The vehicle was engineered at Toyota Technical Center near Ann Arbor, MI, with Greg Bernas as chief engineer.

To develop the demo model so soon after Toyota and Tesla joined forces last summer, TMSUSA CEO Jim Lentz says engineers employed a new decision-and-approval process dubbed ?fast and flexible,? which allowed them to approach the EV?s development as if it were a major midcycle change to the RAV4.

?The team began with a fully engineered current-generation RAV4 to which was added a major powertrain option, along with minor feature and cosmetic changes,? the auto maker says in a statement.

Drivability characteristics, comparable with the current RAV4, were targeted by engineers.

Much of the production EV model, due in 2012, still is undetermined. This includes targeted sales, manufacturing location and final specifications, including battery type and size.

The restyled front fascia, EV badging, push-button shifter and various display meters are changes from the gas-powered RAV4.

The demo EV, of which 35 will be built for testing next year, uses a lithium-metal-oxide battery with a mid-30 kWh capacity and a targeted range of 100 miles (161 km) on a full charge, the same as Nissan Motor Co. Ltd.?s Leaf.

Toyota?s first-generation RAV4 EV of the late 1990s used nickel-metal-hydride batteries and had an 80-110-mile (129-177-km) range.

As for a final assembly location, Toyota is considering several options and combinations.

?The basic vehicle will continue to be built at (our) Woodstock, ON, Canada, (assembly plant), the auto maker says in a statement. ?Tesla will build the battery and related parts and components at its new facility in Palo Alto, CA. The method and installation location of the Tesla components?is being discussed.?

Toyota says the demo RAV4 EV weighs just 220 lbs. (100 kg) more than the current-gen 3.5L V-6-powered CUV. To account for the EV?s added pounds, ?significant retuning? of the suspension and steering was undertaken, as well as relocating ?major components? to balance the battery pack?s heft.

Toyota goes all electric with RAV4 model

Toyota has become the latest automaker to debut a pure electric vehicle, the RAV4 crossover model that will be introduced sometime in 2012 ? adding to the growing list of electrics that will become available over the next couple of years.

The RAV4 Electric demonstration model was unveiled at the recent Los Angeles auto show, one of 35 test models of the vehicle that Toyota says will be built through 2011.

That will allow for complete evaluation before introducing ?a fully engineered vehicle? with a ?target range? of 100 miles between charges of its battery, the Japanese automaker said.

U.S. electric-vehicle maker Tesla will be Toyota's partner on the RAV4 Electric, which will include a battery pack and other electric components built by Tesla at its plant in Palo Alto, Calif.

They will be installed in the RAV4 models built at the Toyota plant in Woodstock, Ontario, Canada, but where final assembly with the electric components will occur hasn't been determined yet, Toyota said.

The demonstration model Toyota showed off in Los Angeles has a lithium-metal-oxide battery. But final specifications for the battery and other electric components remain to be determined, along with the price and what production volumes might be.

Toyota also hasn't said yet whether the RAV4 Electric would be available nationwide or in select markets, such as those states that have adopted California's stricter vehicle emissions standards. But presumably, this will be a vehicle that eventually will be sold in all 50 states.

The on-sale date of the RAV4 Electric will be more than a year behind the introduction next month of the Nissan Leaf all-electric car, as well as the plug-in electric Chevrolet Volt, which unlike the pure electrics has a small gasoline engine to run an onboard generator to keep the car going when the battery runs down.

If the RAV4 Electric does arrive in 2012, it will have other company, as well. Several automakers are working on pure electrics for introduction sometime that year, including Ford, Fiat, Honda, Mitsubishi, Smart and Mini.

Early purchasers of electrics ? generally the first 100,000 for each manufacturer ? will qualify for federal and some state tax rebates and credits. With the $7,500 federal tax credit subtracted, the Leaf will cost U.S. consumers $25,280. So far, a few states have announced their own incentives, which range up to $5,000.

The five-door Leaf hatchback, similar in size and shape to the Nissan Versa, runs on an advanced lithium-ion battery pack. It has a range of up to 100 miles, a top speed of about 85 mph and power equivalent of a car with a V-6 engine,

To recharge the battery, consumers will need to have a special 240-volt charger installed at their homes for an additional $2,200. But there is a federal tax credit that will cover half of that, Nissan said. Those who lease the car also will be able to lease the home charger, which would push the monthly payment to just more than $400.

A full charge at home will take about eight hours and cost about $3 at today's electricity rates, Nissan said. But public quick chargers stationed at strategic locations will be able to top off the battery in less than a half hour.

Until the Tennessee plant goes into product with the batteries and the car, Nissan will be limited to just 50,000 Leafs a year worldwide from the Japanese plant, the company said.

But when it comes on line, the U.S. factory will be able to produce 150,000 of the Leaf and 200,000 of the battery packs annually. Whether that capacity ever will be utilized remains a mystery, as surveys have shown consistently that consumers have ?range anxiety? over pure electrics, worried that they might get stranded somewhere with a dead battery.

Chevy says the Volt has a range of 40 miles on its battery pack, but it can go an additional 300 miles on a tank of gasoline. Unlike current gasoline-electric hybrids, the Volt's gasoline engine does not turn the drive wheels. Instead, it powers an onboard generator that sends electricity to the electric motor and the battery pack.

The RAV4 Electric will be the second generation of this vehicle. Toyota introduced the first one in 1997 in California, but only 1,484 of them were sold or leased. Toyota says that 746 of them are still on the road. That model, which was sold through 2003, had a nickel-metal-hydride battery pack and a range of up to 110 miles.

Development of the new RAV4 Electric is under direction of Toyota's technical center in Michigan. The basis for the demonstration car shown in Los Angeles was a regular 2010 RAV4 from the Ontario plant, in addition to the installation of the electric components, Toyota said.

The goal was to make the driving characteristics of the electric RAV4 as close to those of the gasoline model as possible, the company said.

To that end, the RAV4 Electric prototype accelerates nearly as quickly as a 2010 RAV4 with the optional V-6 gasoline engine ? even though it weighs about 220 pounds more. The battery pack adds most of the extra pounds.

For Q3 2010, Ford and Honda (respectively) are hot on the heels of the once again number-one Toyota, with only one percentage point separating these top three brands in overall consideration (regardless of segment) in the latest Brand Watch study.  Rounding out the top five most-considered among the 37 new-vehicle brands tracked in the Kelley Blue Book Market Intelligence study include Chevrolet and Nissan, respectively.  Consideration for Korean automaker Hyundai, which ousted Nissan for the number-five spot last quarter, slipped to sixth place for Q3 2010 as Nissan's consideration gained three percentage points since Q2 2010.

"The latest Brand Watch data from Kelley Blue Book Market Intelligence indicates that Toyota is slowly recovering from its public-perception crisis and regaining a position of prominence in the minds of new-car shoppers," said James Bell, executive market analyst for Kelley Blue Book's kbb.com.  "However, whether Toyota will ascend as high as it was before the recall crisis remains yet to be seen.  Hot competition from the likes of Ford, Honda, Chevrolet, Nissan and Hyundai could make it very hard for Toyota to keep a strong lead moving forward."

Overall for Q3 2010, new-car shoppers rank durability/reliability, fuel efficiency, driving comfort, driving performance and safety (respectively) as the top five importance factors while shopping for their next new vehicle (regardless of segment).

Specific to the non-luxury sedan/coupe/hatchback segment, Hyundai consideration maintains a slight advantage at fourth place over fifth-place Nissan, following Toyota, Honda and Ford, respectively.  Additionally, for the first time, Mitsubishi was the top-rated brand for the importance factor of 'cool factor/vehicle image' in this category.  

In consideration of the non-luxury SUV/CUV segment, both Nissan and Jeep saw significant increases in consideration over the prior quarter.  In addition, Subaru made its first appearance as the top-ranked brand among the importance factors of safety and versatility/flexibility in this category.

Specific to the luxury sedan/coupe/hatchback segment, BMW has regained the top spot for consideration in Q3 2010, followed by Lexus, Audi, Acura and Mercedes-Benz, respectively.  While Mercedes-Benz places fifth for consideration in this segment, it continues to garner the top rank for most of the factors of importance (driving comfort, safety, interior design/layout, luxuriousness/sophistication, prestige/brand status, family friendliness).

In consideration of the luxury SUV/CUV segment, Lexus remains the most-considered brand for Q3 2010, even though the brand's consideration has been eroding for the last few quarters.  Following Lexus for top consideration of luxury SUV/CUVs are Acura, Cadillac, Lincoln and BMW (respectively).

Ford continues to remain the most-considered truck brand, experiencing a dramatic increase in consideration since Q2 2010.  In addition, the importance factor of safety has edged out driving performance to round out the top factors of importance for trucks (durability/reliability, fuel efficiency, towing/hauling capacity, driving comfort and safety, respectively).

Honda continues to remain the most-considered minivan brand, yet of all minivan brands, only domestic automakers Chrysler and Dodge experienced a slight increase in minivan consideration for Q3 2010 over the previous quarter.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) today announced that eight Toyota, Lexus and Scion vehicles were among 66 winners of Top Safety Pick awards for 2011.  

Responding to the announcement, Toyota said it ?is pleased to have received eight IIHS Top Safety Picks for 2011, which we believe is reflective of our ongoing commitment to developing safe and reliable vehicles for our customers.?

The eight winners are: Toyota Avalon, Corolla, Highlander, Sienna and Venza; Lexus RX, and Scion tc and xB.  Only two automakers had more winners: Hyundai/Kia and Volkswagen/Audi each had nine.  Sienna was the only minivan to make the list.

Top Safety Pick awards recognize vehicles that do the best job of protecting people in front, side, rollover and rear crashes based on good ratings in IIHS tests.  Winners also must have available electronic stability control, a crash avoidance feature that significantly reduces crash risk.

There are three thrifty reasons why the best-selling car in the United States for the past 10 years is likely to stay on top.

In gasoline-electric hybrid form, the Toyota Camry, revamped for 2012, beats all other mid-size hybrid sedans with a combined city/highway fuel economy rating of 43 miles per gallon, according to the federal government. This is up from 33 mpg for the 2011 Camry Hybrid.

The 2012 Camry with V-6 tops all other mid-size, non-hybrid, V-6-powered sedans in fuel economy with a government rating of 21 mpg combined city/highway mileage.

And the 2012 Camry with gasoline-powered, four-cylinder engine gets better mileage than its predecessor ? a combined 25 mpg, per the federal government.

This is up from 22 mpg in the 2011 Camry and means that in the gasoline-powered, non-hybrid, mid-size sedan segment, the four-cylinder, 2012 Camry is second only to the lower-powered, smaller, 2012 Hyundai Elantra whose mileage rating is 29 mpg.

That's not all. The five-passenger, 2012 Camry has a more upscale interior, new features and more engine power than its predecessor and earns a top rating of five out of five stars in the U.S. government's overall crash test results.

The four-door Camry also is a recommended buy of Consumer Reports magazine, which lists its reliability as above average.

Starting manufacturer's suggested retail price, including destination charge, is $22,715 for a 2012 Camry L with 178-horsepower, four-cylinder engine and six-speed automatic transmission. A 2012 Camry with 268-horsepower V-6 and six-speed automatic has a starting retail price of $27,400. Toyota does not offer a manual transmission in the 2012 Camry.

In comparison, the 2012 Ford Fusion sedan has a starting MSRP, including destination charge, of $20,995 with 175-horsepower, four-cylinder engine and manual transmission. A 2012 Ford Fusion with six-speed automatic starts at $21,990. Meantime, the 2012 Honda Accord sedan with 177-horsepower, four-cylinder engine and manual transmission has a starting retail price of $22,150. A 2012 Accord sedan with five-speed automatic starts at $22,950.

Camry wrapped up calendar 2011 with the most U.S. sales of any auto ? 308,510. But this down 6 percent from the previous year's 327,804 Camry sales.

Toyota sales declines have been attributed to the earthquake and tsunami in Japan in 2011 that affected company operations and supplier parts. But Toyota also has been hurt by tougher competition as well as publicity about suddenly accelerating Toyota cars, which are making their way into the courts via lawsuits.

The 2012 Camry looks sleeker than its predecessor, even if the test car, a top-of-the-line XLE with V-6, didn't get a second look from passersby.

The new exterior deceptively masks the roomy interior, where front seat riders have a generous 41.6 inches of legroom and where back seat passengers get a commendable 38.9 inches of legroom. In fact, a 6-foot passenger was comfortable in either front or back seat of the test Camry. Note that the Fusion has more front legroom - 42.6 inches. But the Fusion's back-seat legroom is less, at 37.1 inches.

The inside of the 2012 Camry is freshly redone and looks richer than before, thanks to better materials and a new dashboard design. The top of the dashboard as well as the top plastic ledges near the side windows are soft to the touch, not hard, cheap-feeling plastic.

In spite of natural disasters, the automaker forges ahead with its efforts to develop fuel-efficient technologies.

The company saw its worst performance in the U.S. in three decades, as it was beset by production and distribution disruptions due to the earthquake in Japan and floods in Thailand. Losses in the U.S. by Toyota, as well as Honda (HMC +0.40%), translated to gains in market share for the Detroit Three in 2011.

 Toyota was able to post a modest 0.4% year-over-year growth in the U.S. last month, while its total year sales declined by around 7%. In comparison, General Motors (GM +0.82%), Ford (F +0.58%) and Chrysler posted 13%, 11% and 26% growth, respectively, in the U.S. last year.
 
As Toyota's inventory continues to recover from shortages after the earthquake, the company expects that increased model availability will help it regain lost U.S. market share. Even though the floods in Thailand have disrupted Toyota's production and sales in other international markets, especially in Asia, the automaker doesn't expect any impact on its North American business. 

In spite of the disruptions, Toyota has continued with its efforts to develop fuel-efficient technologies, which will help it compete with similar products launched by rivals over the last year. If nature spares the automaker, we expect that Toyota will be able to grow its U.S. market share in the medium term.

However, Toyota now expects that the yen will remain stronger against the dollar and euro, which will reduce its operating income by 160 billion yen.

Toyota Motor Corp. unveiled a plug-in hybrid concept car called the NS4 at the Detroit auto show. The car maker said the new design is separate from the Prius family of hybrid vehicles and represents the company's vision for future cars.

The NS4 is also aimed at redefining the way drivers interact with their cars through what Toyota calls the Human-Machine Interface or HMI. The system includes numerous touch-screens and is meant to work intuitively in the same way a smartphone does. However, the HMI's rapid information processing and output are part of a strategy to reduce distraction and simplify driving.

Toyota says the system is adaptive ? able to "learn" a drivers' preferences and habits and anticipate their reactions in various situations on the road. The car maker said the NS4 is the result of a challenge it issued to its engineers to come up with a global concept car that could be ready for the market by 2015.

The car's powertrain is to become the next generation of Toyota's Hybrid Synergy Drive plug-in system, with smaller, lighter components, better fuel economy and longer all-electric range compared with today's hybrid models. It will also accelerate faster than current Toyota hybrids.

"In this digital age, cars are becoming another spoke in the wheel of our electronic connectivity," said Jim Lentz,  president and chief operating officer of Toyota Motor Sales. "NS4 demonstrates Toyota's take on the human connection to the car with technology that considers both emotional and rational relationships, person-to-car and car-to-society."

Toyota has offered a glimpse of its next-generation Prius at the North American International Motor Show in the form of the NS4 plug-in hybrid concept.

Altogether more bold - not to mention larger - than the current Prius, the NS4 is only intended to offer a taste of the design language that will be used in the next e-car, so don't expect the end product to look exactly like this when it arrives in 2015.

According to Toyota, the new Hybrid Synergy Drive drivetrain will be smaller, lighter, more fuel efficient, more powerful and will have a greater electric-only range and a shorter charge time than the plug-in version of the current Prius, which goes on sale later this year.

Among the NS4's points of interest are a touchscreen-based control system developed in partnership with Microsoft and Intel; hydrophobic and anti-fogging glass; and Adaptive Driving Beam (ADB) headlights.

ADB uses a camera mounted behind the front grille and partial shielding inside the headlights to change the intensity and direction of the headlights and so allow drivers to run with near high beam amounts of illumination but without blinding every other poor sod on the road.

The NS4 is also packs in panoramic rear-view cameras and a clever lane-guidance system that takes its data from a forward-facing millimetre-wave radar and two cameras.

Sharing the limelight - and, I suspect, a floor-plan, judging by the similar size of the two cars - with the NS4 was the FCV-R hydrogen fuel-cell concept that, according to Toyota, can run for over 435 miles on a tank of good old liquid H.

Toyota Welcomes home troops with special discounts

To celebrate the return of America's troops from overseas deployments, Toyota and Lexus are both offering special promotions and discounts for those needing a new car back at home.

Men and women in uniform can take advantage of special financing offers on new vehicles as well as receive cash-back rebates so long as they jump onto the deal in time. Toyota is offering a 1.9-percent APR promotion for up to 60 months on new 2011 and 2012 models and a $500 military rebate comes along with it. Purchases need to be made before March 5, 2012 in order to take advantage of the low APR financing, but the rebate will last until January 2, 2013.

Lexus on the other hand will be offering military personnel 0.9-percent APR loans on 2011 and 2012 vehiclesfrom their ES, IS lines and the 2012 RX350. All other vehicles from Lexus can be financed at 1.9-percent APR and Lexus will give a rebate of $750 to new buyers. The loan offer expires on February 29, 2012 while the rebate will run until March 31, 2012.

Of course you'll have to qualify for the low APR financing and all applicants must be on active duty in the US Military or US Military Inactive Reserve. Retired military personnel are not eligible. You can find a dealer participating in the "Welcome Home Special APR Program" by looking up your closest dealer atwww.toyota.com/dealers and www.lexus.com/dealers and giving them a ring. Financing must be done through either Toyota Financial Services or Lexus Financial Services
