Toyota Makes Crash Avoidance Technology More Affordable

May 12th, 2015 by

Toyota is aiming to boost the availability of crash avoidance technology to make modern roads even safer. While cutting-edge safety features like automatic braking are highly effective, they are costly to produce and generally reserved for premium models. Toyota is now providing these options for more affordable models, like the RAV4 compact SUV and Avalon sedan. Toyota will also cut costs of these life-saving safety features and bundle them in optional add-on packages.

Automatic Braking

Automatic braking is a state-of-the-art braking system at the forefront of crash avoidance technology, but how does it work? Automatic braking uses laser technology and camera sensors to monitor the distance between vehicles. If a vehicle stops abruptly in front of your car, automatic braking stops the vehicle to prevent a collision. This can prevent accidents from common fender benders to severe crashes.

Toyota Vehicle Selection

Which vehicles in the Toyota lineup will offer these new safety mechanisms? The RAV4 and Avalon sedan will be the pioneers of affordable crash avoidance technology. The RAV4 is Toyota’s most popular compact SUV and is also the third best-selling model in the Toyota lineup, only surpassed by the Camry and Corolla. The Avalon is Toyota’s luxury full-size sedan with plenty of high-tech amenities, refined style, and tremendous fuel economy. While these two quality vehicles will begin the transition, Toyota plans to expand crash avoidance technology to its entire lineup in the future.

Other Safety Features

In addition to automatic braking, Toyota is promoting other innovative crash avoidance technologies like the following:

  • Adaptive headlights switch from high to low beams as traffic dictates to prevent accidental blinding, collisions, and damage liability claims.
  • Lane departure warning alerts the driver when the vehicle is drifting into another lane without a turn signal. This is particularly effective for distracted and drowsy drivers.
